Nam Prik Mang-Da and Sataw Phao (Chili Dip with Horseshoe Crab and Roasted Stink Beans)

Horseshoe Crab or “Mang dana” Giant Water Bug is a member of Belostomatidae family which lives in freshwater. It has a unique of smell which is popular in cooking.


Nutrition

The Horseshoe Crab contains protein, carbohydrate, calcium and phosphorus. The dish is made higher in protein and calcium by shrimp paste. The dish is always served with stink beans and vegetables.

Ingredient

25 each fresh bird eye chilies
10 each garlic cloves
4 each red shallots
2 tsp. quality shrimp paste
1 each roasted horseshoe crab
3 each medium size prawns, cooked and chopped
A pinch of salt
Roasted stink beans (sataw) to taste


How-to

1. Pound the bird eye chilies, shallots and garlic in a mortar. Add the salt and chopped prawns, and pound until mixed.
2. Add the horseshoe crab and shrimp paste, keep pounding for a minute.
3. Season to taste with a little palm sugar and/or lime juice.
4. Serve with the roasted stink beans.
